Whisked is a conceptual website and brand in which I played the role as the lead designer, lead developer, photographer, and videographer. Designed with a target audience of women from the age group of 16-45, this site was created to serve as an informational site about creating delectable baked goods from scratch. With the use of video, and photography as the medium of providing the message, this site serves as an all-in-one site where the user can get interactive video directions to accomplish their given baking task.
The overall design and color palette of the site is directly correlated towards its target audience. The crisp layout of the site was used in conjunction to various textures that could often be found in a kitchen. The global navigation and the footer is utilizes a napkin like texture whereas the secondary navigation on the left features a red and white pattern similar to that of a wash cloth of picnic blanket. The reasoning behind these design choices was to reflect on the aforementioned kitchen feel of the site.
One of the main challenges faced when developing this site was the implementation of the HTML5 video player. Due to the veracity that it's not openly supported by all browsers, it proposed a issue for users that were utilizing older browsers and operating systems. The reasoning behind the implementation of such a technology was the fact that it provided users with multiple methods of viewing the information videos, such as from a iPhone which doesn't support conventional Flash methods.
From a technical standpoint, this site features PHP, MySQLi, CSS3, and hand coded HTML5 video players that were created to maintain a consistent design. With the addition of the HTML5 video player, the encoding of the video files used rely on three formats to ensure that regardless of what browser the user is viewing the informational videos in, it will always work. Essentially, the combination of the three differing codecs remedied the issue that arose for users with older browsers and operating systems.
